The California Dietary Practices Survey (CDPS) was the most extensive dietary and physical activity assessment of adults 18 years and older in the state of California. CDPS was designed in 1989 and was administered biennially in odd years through 2013. Using a list of participating CalFresh households and random digit dial, 1,468 adults (ages 18 and over) were interviewed via phone survey between the months of June and October. .

Demographic data included gender, age, ethnicity, education level, income, physical activity level, overweight status, and SNAP-Ed eligibility status.

Data were oversampled for low-income adults to provide greater sensitivity for analyzing trends among the target population.

Overweight Status: Overweight/Obese = Body mass index greater than or equal to 25. Not overweight = Body mass index less than 25. Income Income = household income for the individual interviewed.

SNAP/CalFresh Status SNAP participants are defined as having indicated they or someone in their household received CalFresh benefits in the last 12 months. The population not receiving CalFresh benefits with incomes between 131% and 185% of the Federal Poverty Level was not an adequate size for analysis. Likely eligible = household income at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level, but have not received CalFresh benefits in the last 12 months. Not eligible = household income above 185% of the Federal Poverty Level, and have not received CalFresh benefits in the last 12 months.

As defined by the 2008 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and Objectives 2.1 and 2.2 of Healthy People 2020, it is recommended that adults engage in 75 minutes of vigorous or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, or an equivalent combination.

Chi-square analysis was performed on each category. There was significance at the p<.001 level for Ethnicity, Education, and SNAP/CalFresh Status, % FPL. There was significance at the p<.01 level for Overweight Status. There was significance at the p<.05 level for Income.
